For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Restored Circa 1912 Waterman 442 Safety Fountain Pen in Black Hard Rubber with Trefoil Vine pattern Sterling Silver Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned, and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
I have hand cleaned the NIB and feed. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel, cap, spiral, rod connector, turning knob, and end unit with mineral oil. This fountain pen has excellent suction and did not require any fluorocarbon rubber o-rings or cork for it to hold ink. Hand polished the Sterling Clip, Cap, and Barrel along with the Ideal 14K #2 Flexible NIB.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay in the Trefoil Vine pattern, which was in use on the Waterman pens from roughly 1907 to 1923. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep black color with no oxidation. The lower end of the barrel is stamped with, "WATERMAN'S PAT. May 23, 1899, & AUG. 24, 1903 IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. SAFETY PEN". The butt end of the barrel end has a faint imprint that reads, "442".
The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly. There is a monogram on the barrel cartouche that reads, "EMK". There are no cracks, nicks, or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful that displays less than normal use wear and scratching - a very clean pen. There are no leaks from the cap or the turning knob and tested with first for 48 hours. This Waterman 442 measures 4 3/4" in length capped and 5 7/8" posted with the nib extended.
The NIB is a 14K #2 Semi-Flexible Ideal Waterman Stub NIB. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measured at a broad point of .91mm when measured with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium line measuring roughly .60mm with light pressure on horizontal strokes and flexes to a triple broad stroke of approximately 2.02mm with a medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. This nib is a great, smooth writer! The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue-Black Ink.
Sterling Silver Overlay Waterman Safety Fountain Pens are uncommon and a scarce pen to find, especially with a riveted clip. This 442 Safety is exceptionally clean and a real treasure for collectors. I would grade this Waterman 442 Sterling Silver Safety Fountain Pen as Excellent condition. A superb collector-worthy writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
